TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ??Financial decisions made at a young age could have a significant impact on the future, said one University of Alabama consumer sciences student.

?A lot of people don?t understand how spending money here and there can add up,? said 22-year-old Katie Logan, a UA senior majoring in financial planning and counseling in the College of Human Environmental Sciences. ??If you make smart investments when you?re young, you can have a very wealthy future,? said Logan, who serves as?president of the?Capstone Financial and Consumer Education Society, a student organization seeking to help UA students and others increase financial and economics skills.

This message is one that Logan and other members of the UA student group hope to share with Brookwood High School students April 24 when they present financial literacy lessons to juniors and seniors enrolled in?a personal finance course.

?Many high school students don?t have a clue about personal finances,? said Jackie Emplaincourt, Brookwood?s career technology instructor. ?Half of them don?t know how credit cards work or how to apply for one, half don?t know how to use a checkbook. Our push at the high school level is to get this information to these students.?

In addition to stressing the importance of the time value of money, the UA students will use games and team competitions to share information on budgeting, investing and saving. They will?also talk about life in college and provide tips on managing money while enjoying those exciting years.

?We really want to put a face to college for them,? Logan said. ?There are many students, particularly in this area, who have a hard time making it to college, and we want to show them that it is possible, and they can do it.?

For the UA students, it?s an opportunity to prepare for the professional world by pulling together information and presenting it to others, as well as providing a service to the community.

?Being a part of the community is something our organization is really aiming for,? Logan said. ?We just want the (Brookwood) students to realize that financial planning is not some unattainable thing. It?s something you do every day. It just needs to be put in real terms so they can apply it to their lives.?

The University of Alabama, a student-centered research university, is experiencing significant growth in both enrollment and academic quality. This growth, which is positively impacting the campus and the state's economy, is in keeping with UA's vision to be the university of choice for the best and brightest students. UA, the state's flagship university, is an academic community united in its commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all Alabamians.
