Colorado Senate President John Morse called on his training as a paramedic Friday after a man stopped breathing in the middle of a Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice meeting in Jefferson County.
The man, identified as a former judge, collapsed just as Morse opened the session, said Doug Schepman, spokesman for the Senate president's office. Just Wednesday, Morse had includedan anecdote about himself performing CPR in the 1970s as a paramedic in a speech to senators on the first day of the legislative session, .
According to Schepman, someone in the room checked the man's pulse and said it had stopped. Morse ran over and was preparing to administer CPR when the man started breathing on his own again.
"It's rather ironic," Schepman said. "The whole story of the speech was a scenario that he experienced while responding to a serious injury in the late '70s."
Paramedics arrived and took the man to the hospital early Friday afternoon, Schepman said. He said Morse does not consider himself a hero.
