We?re focusing on health + wellness this month since it?s the new year, and we?re not just talking about business health. The people who comprise businesses have to be happy in order for the business to be a success. Did you know that employees in good health are 3 times more productive than employees in poor health?* Here are five ways to feel happier (and healthier) at work. Try implementing these tips for yourself or within your company?s culture.
1. Stop complaining
The old saying that ?misery loves company? is absolutely true. And one of the easiest ways to feel negatively about your job is to surround yourself with others that feel negatively about their jobs or the company. Separating yourself from negative attitudes in the workplace will positively influence your productivity and your mood. Instead of complaining, when a problem arises at work, try to be proactive about a solution?even if it?s not your job to do so. If someone is complaining at work, offer solution ideas to help alleviate their stress. Speaking positively about people and your company will ultimately lead others to do so as well.
2. Get up
Sitting all day can have a (very) negative effect on your health. It?s important to get up and walk around the office whenever possible. Moving every hour?even if it?s just to get a coffee in the kitchen?can make a big difference. Standing desks are also a great way to stop the sitting + slumping. If possible, try to get a little exercise in on your lunch break, even if it?s just walking around the building a few times.
3. Re-focus
Many of us are in front of computers all day. It?s important that you keep your screens as far away from your face as possible to reduce eye problems. Once every half hour, try to look around and focus on things far away from your desk in the office. Your eyes need a workout too, and you do not want them to get into the habit of only looking at a screen. If you do sit at a computer all day, try to limit screen time at night.
4. Ask questions
Clear and open communication is essential for any happy environment. Improve your communication with your co-workers by asking questions and sending status updates. Asking questions will always help you understand your role in a project or specific tasks and expectations. Often times, people refrain from asking questions because they fear looking ?stupid? or being a nuisance, but I think everyone would prefer you ask a question and perform well on the first try than not ask and get it wrong. Being proactive about sending updates will ensure you are on top of all of your tasks and also exhibit to your superiors your many responsibilities as well as your prioritizing and time management skills.
5. Minimize distractions
This is a big one because it is often the most difficult to achieve but can have the biggest impact. Distractions can include incessant email notifications, a blinking voicemail light, a chatty co-worker or social networks, just to name a few. All of these things can interrupt your work flow and make you less productive throughout the day. Therefore, it is important to take measures to reduce these distractions. The more productive you are at work, the more satisfied you feel and the less you worry about when you go home. Try turning off email notification pop-ups and checking your email at scheduled times throughout the day. If a chatty co-worker is an issue, listen to music on your headphones. Try jotting down a quick to-do list that you do every morning. For example, check emails, listen to (and delete) voicemails and tidying up your desk. Achieving these things will ensure that you can begin the workday with a clean slate and keep you focused throughout the morning. Do similar tasks after lunch that will help you facilitate a routine to maximize productivity.
